Hello! I’m Nicole Marquez, and I still can’t believe that this is my life and this is my story. But here goes…
In January 2008, I packed my bags and moved to New York to pursue my Broadway dreams. I was in the big city, going to auditions, and pursuing the big dream.
Then came the plot twist.
On August 30, 2008, I was on top of the world! Heading home after two auditions, I realized my keys were missing. I was locked out. So, brave big-city athletic-girl that I was, I went to the roof, hoping to go down the fire escape to an open window and make it in to my apartment that way.
Instead, I fell off the roof.
What exactly happened is a mystery. I don’t know how I fell, or how the fall even happened. I learned later that I was found lying for eight hours, broken and bleeding in the building’s air shaft next to the garbage. I don’t remember being taken to the hospital, unconscious and not expected to survive.
I do remember waking up in the hospital, hooked up to machines and with no idea what had come before or what was coming next.
Thus began my journey. It’s still ongoing—but man oh man, it’s been quite a ride already. Spoiler alert: I’m not done yet. I’m a rare bird, I am now classified as an ambulatory incomplete quadriplegic. Meaning, I shouldn't be walking...
But here I am.
